At Sunset, Matthew Schultz

The wolves prowl our property line, stalking us with hungerlust,

their gaze arrests like the dying clutching at their final breath.

Through the oak leaves beyond even our neighbor’s field

that hang like lace upon the branches, a burst of orange

ignites the cold western sky as if the sun were apologizing

for abandoning us, once again, behind the purple mountains.
