mother's promise, Öykü Akın

corruption of the bone stings in mere discomfort, no great pain

you will disappear before the sharpest moment, feel no ache

the weight deserts to inhabit the earth, serene to bathe in decay

lungs collapse with an air of relief, sinks the struggle to breathe

disintegration befalls the body at the end, the skin rots only after

you won’t be there to see it, your pupils will have already melted

the tendons rip in a violent shiver, but you will never tremble

i will wrap you in a blanket and throw you into the fire

Öykü Akın is an undergraduate student in Boğaziçi University and an emerging bilingual writer residing in Istanbul. She can be found writing micro fiction and poetry or working on her fantasy novel.
